Pergamon, also known as Pergamum, served as the capital of the Kingdom of Pergamon during the Hellenistic era (281–133 BC) under the Attalid Dynasty. The city boasted remarkable features, including a sophisticated hospital and a grand library designed to rival the famed library in Alexandria. The Asklepion in Pergamon, attributed to Galen, the pioneer of modern medicine, functioned as a spa and medical center. Utilizing music and water, they employed innovative healing techniques and analyzed dreams. The prosperity of the Kingdom of Pergamon, fueled by agriculture and silver mines, led to notable inventions such as parchment (charta pergamena).
Pergamon’s significance extended to its temples, with several dedicated to Athena and Zeus. The Zeus Temple of Pergamon is currently housed in the Pergamon Museum in Germany. Additionally, Pergamon holds importance in Christian history as one of the Seven Churches mentioned in the Book of Revelations. Described as the city where Satan dwells and where his throne is located, Pergamon remains a crucial archaeological site and a prominent tourist attraction in modern-day Turkey.
