About this tour

Pamukkale, translated as “cotton castle” in Turkish, stands as a breathtaking natural wonder situated in the southwestern part of Turkey. Renowned for its mesmerizing white terraces formed by calcium springs, Pamukkale is shaped by the hot waters of 17 thermal springs in the region. As the hot spring water emerges, it releases carbon dioxide and deposits calcium bicarbonate, creating the iconic white cascades that have captivated visitors worldwide.

Beyond its geological marvels, Pamukkale is home to the ancient city of Hierapolis, a UNESCO World Heritage Site founded in the 2nd century BC by the King of Pergamon, later evolving into a Roman city. Hierapolis thrived as a bustling city, celebrated for its sanctuaries and status as a pivotal trade hub. The city gained renown for its production of purple dye and cloth, highly coveted commodities in the ancient world.

Hierapolis holds not only historical and cultural significance but is also linked to the martyrdom of Saint Philip. While uncertainty remains regarding whether this refers to Philip the Apostle or Philip the Evangelist, the crypt believed to house his remains is a sacred site, drawing numerous visitors.

As an ancient city intertwining Pagan origins with Christian traditions, the remnants of Hierapolis provide a fascinating glimpse into the region’s rich history. Visitors can explore well-preserved ancient ruins, including the theater, necropolis, and magnificent Roman baths. The chance to unwind in the hot waters of the ancient pool offers a unique and tranquil experience, enhancing the allure of this extraordinary site.

In summary, Pamukkale and Hierapolis present a harmonious blend of natural beauty and historical significance, making it an essential destination for those intrigued by Turkey’s diverse and culturally rich heritage.
