Explore the captivating remnants of the Hittite Empire at Hattusas, the capital during the late Bronze Age, with its ancient ruins standing as one of Turkey’s premier archaeological sites. Despite the mostly reconstructed foundations, walls, and rock carvings, Hattusas emanates an almost eerily enchanting atmosphere, immersing visitors in the historic antiquity of a place lost to time.
As you step into Hattusas, the once impressive city with spectacular structures, the admission grants you close-up views of numerous ancient relics. Highlights include the Buyuk Mabed (Great Temple), one of the best-preserved Hittite temples, and San Kale (Yellow Castle), believed to be a Phrygian fort. The site unveils various ancient temples, forts, castles, gates, and tunnels, transporting you back to the time of the Hittite Empire and leaving a lasting impression on lovers of ancient history.
The tour commences at 7:30 am, where you meet your guide and driver at the hotel. After a 210 km drive with a rest break halfway, you reach Hattusas, with the journey providing fantastic views of the countryside. Begin the exploration at Yazılıkaya to witness the open-air sanctuary in the morning light, showcasing bas-reliefs.
Following a visit to Yazılıkaya, indulge in lunch at a local restaurant. Post-lunch, dive into the archaeological site of Hattusas, delving into its urban organization, preserved constructions like temples and royal residences, and notable features such as the Lions’ Gate and the Royal Gate and Tunnel. After the comprehensive exploration, the tour concludes as you drive back to Cappadocia, leaving you with a deepened understanding of the Hittite Empire’s historical significance.
